Here is a very quick and easy performance tweak for those of you running Windows XP on your computer. This tweak involves changing the way Windows uses the prefetcher, a cache folder. This is a very easy tweak that can decrease boot time and the time it takes to load programs. Here’s how to change the prefetcher settings:
- Go to the start menu and select Run
- Type in “regedit” and hit enter
- When the registry editor loads, search for the following key
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters\EnablePrefetcher] - Set the value to 3 (0-Disable, 1-App launch prefetch, 2-Boot Prefetch, 3-Both)
- Reboot
If you are not familiar with making adjustments to the Windows registry file, please be careful. It is always recommended that you create a registry backup file or set a Windows Restore point before making any registry adjustments.
